MinoanMiss
Mar. 4th, 2026 10:54 amI'm feeling punched in the gut by the terrible news about
minoanmiss (Rubynye on AO3). I've disabled replies as I just want to remember her for now.
She loved life and tried so hard, and she'd been through so much.
I made this for her years ago, as she loved Crete and the Minoans, hence her username. Putting it here to remember her.

How to download an AO3 fic when the site's intermittently down
Mar. 3rd, 2026 11:59 amYou may already know this, but I found it worked today, when maybe not all of the site's down even though I still get the error message. Recently when the site was fully down, it didn't work. Worth a try, from time to time, especially if you've saved rec list links or are using a rec list site other than AO3. 😉
Paste this into your browser: https://download.archiveofourown.org/downloads/000000/fic.epub
And put the fic number in instead of the zeroes.
That's it! I read on kindle so epub works for me. If you want an html or pdf of the fic, just change that bit - it'll probably work.
ETA: also, time to visit the Audiofic Archive and enjoy your favourite fics as podfic!

Fannish 50 2026 #12: two mystery recs
Mar. 2nd, 2026 09:55 amI don't anticipate getting fannish about either of these shows, but I enjoyed both. They are similar, in that both are mysteries, with a complicated plot that lasts the entire 6-8 episode season, tying together seemingly disparate threads. Tonally so so different.
Dark Winds: I've only watched the first two seasons, taking a little break before seasons 3 and 4. Set on a reservation in the 1970s, Dark Winds focuses on the local police force, led by Joe Leaphorn, and his two deputies, Bernadette Manuelito and Jim Chee. The clothes, furnishings, etc. were amusing to revisit, as I'm old enough to remember those styles, and the Native American culture interesting. Overall very serious, both because of the hard life on the reservation and the personal trauma suffered by Leaphorn.
Currently on Netflix/AMC. I don't usually binge shows, but I do like coming late to this show so that I can watch an episode a day. I'd have trouble keeping everything straight if I had to wait a week between each episode. Dark Winds is based on a book series by Tony Hillerman. I haven't read any of them, so can't speak to the faithfulness to the source material.
Deadloch: I've only watched the first season, as the second doesn't stream until March 20. Set in Australia in current days, Deadloch also focuses on the local police force, led by the lesbian Dulcie Collins, whose partner is the local veterinarian. A man is found murdered on the local beach, and Collins clashes with the detective sent to investigate, another woman. So many women in this series, almost all of the main characters, it's just delightful. The mayor, the rich matriarch, one of the deputies, the two young native women who find the first body, etc. Also, the victims are all male, which is a pleasing change.
Deadloch has lots of humor, which I admit I struggled with a bit, especially from the visiting detective, whose personality is really broad and makes lots of extravagant complaints. I had to consciously accept that she was supposed to be funny, and then she was hysterical. Occasionally I was a little confused by the cultural differences and a few of the accents were difficult for me, but overall well worth the adjustment.
On Prime, though hopefully will circulate to other channels for those who don't have it.

monday morning
Mar. 2nd, 2026 11:37 amDay 1 of the new contract.
I do wish the agent had negotiated a day or two off. I could do with a break. Everything is mad crazy busy around here.
And we're trying to acclimatise the Tweety Sweeties right now, but don't really have anywhere to put them right now, so they're in a cage on the front porch during the day (with water, food, dustbath, and perch) and get brought in at night to sleep safely.

That should be Nien-go on the left, and Jima-wu on the right. They are, once again, named after food: nien go is the palm sugar and glutinous rice new year cake, and jima-wu is black sesame.
The sole exception to this chicken naming standard has been the 'Lockdown Ladies', Gladys Berechicklian (named after the NSW Premier - like a US state governor - during the early part of the pandemic) and Dr Kerry Chant (named after the NSW Health Minister at the time). I don't know why we landed on those, but it seemed funny at the time, and Gladys Berechicklian always gets a good laugh out of people!
I have political thoughts about Australia and everything that's going on in the world, but will post them another time. *sigh*

old HD
Feb. 27th, 2026 10:50 amSo, I was reading a Thread where a guy was warning about old drives, and how they might not last very long anymore because of degradation of the components used in them.
So, while looking for a mouse this morning, I dug up 2 old HDs (circa 2010?) and two external HDs and figured I'd kick them started and see if they worked.
And I just found the MOTHERLODE of photos!
Dating back to 2011! Including ones of my old cat, and the parentals' old cat, and friends' children as babies! WOW.
And old trips! Including a few that I thought I'd lost forever!
(Apparently, I have always taken lots of photos of builidngs!.)
Also, boy was I skinny!! Either that, or the camera made me look skinny. Oh, younger me, why did you not realise? XD

Draft...2?
Feb. 26th, 2026 07:20 pmFinished Draft 2 of The Nullifae: And If I Rise. Had to rewrite a whole section in the middle, then cram in a sequence where they meet the Oracle, who's a Fae.
There's still some stuff to be done - I need to rewrite the opening scene so it's more happening, less infodumping. And I think I want to write a snapshot at the end where Jenna is getting more or less fired from her job. Do I write her getting fired from her work, or do I just show her in the doghouse before she calls the Director of Crossover who gave her his number if she decided she wanted a change of scenery?
Choices choices.
It's about 60K finished, which isn't huge but isn't small potatoes either.

Fannish 50 2026 #11: The X-Files
Feb. 25th, 2026 10:15 pmI watched The X-Files from the beginning, just on the basis that the trailer looked interesting, and enjoyed it very much the first 4-5 seasons. I was reasonably fannish, attending several conventions, but didn't get much into fanfic or interacting on whatever kind of internet forum it would have been then.
Seeing Chris Carter at a convention was one of the things that started burning me out. Because people were asking about the 'conspiracy' episodes and how they tied together, and looking at him, I thought: you don't have an overall plan and you're really entertained that fans are spending so much time believing you do and trying to figure it out.
I could have been completely maligning him, of course, but the more episodes that seemed to tie together but left viewers dangling, the more I burned out. I think I watched an episode of two after David Duchovny left but I didn't warm to the new characters and dropped it.
I watched the first season of the reboot and hated it, though I don't remember much now.
So I'm not looking for more X-Files but I've read that Ryan Coogler is producing the reboot, and okay. For him, I will give it a try. I thought Black Panther was an excellent movie and I trust that Coogler will have an interesting take. Supernatural stories can be fun.
